The first part of the paper presents a case study of the Chinese clan associations, tracing the emergence of these organizations in the early nineteenth century when Singapore was under British colonial rule, the influential role they played in the social life of the Chinese community, and the weakening links of these organizations with the younger generation in post-independent Singapore. It also examines the efforts made by the government and the community to revive these organizations in the latter half of the twentieth century with the growth of China as an emerging economic power and a new awareness of Chinese cultural identity. The second part of the study focuses on the grassroots organisations (GROs), a uniquely Singaporean form of NGOs guided and supported by the government, and examines their functions and hierarchical structure. It traces the emergence of these organizations, which had their roots in the community centres (CCs) a large network of which began to flourish with the establishment of the People’s Association in 1960. After the PAP election victory in 1963, the government decided to institutionalize the grassroots organizations. Subsequently, community-based volunteers’ organizations were formed, followed by the Citizens’ Consultative Committees (CCCs) in 1965, which played a pivotal role in channeling citizens’ suggestions to the government. In the late 1970s, Residents’ Committees (RCs) together with Neighbourhood Committees (NCs) were established to promote neighbourliness and harmony in public housing estates. The Singapore Club, later known as the Town Club and then the Singapore Town Club, was founded in 1862 by William Henry McLeod Read (W. H. Read), Municipal Commissioner, member of the Legislative Council and Justice of the Peace. Membership was limited to top civil servants, merchants and professionals including lawyers and doctors. An interesting item in the collection is a guest book containing members’ handwritten suggestions and comments on the Club’s facilities and services.  The entries dating from 3 May 1911, offer an interesting record of the social life, manners and customs of prominent Singapore residents in the early to mid 20th century. They also provide a primary record of prominent 20th century personalities, like R. O. The school was originally known as the Singapore Nanyang Girls’ School and offered primary education. It was officially renamed Nanyang Girls’ High School in 1931 when it began to offer secondary education.
