It was financed, run and edited by a group of Jawi Peranakkan (local born Indian Muslims). With the aim to give its readers the latest local and foreign news, it appeared every Monday with news of events, government notices, some advertisements, an editorial and syair (poetry corner). Besides discussing the weakness of the Malay community, it was also the first Malay newspaper to criticise British colonial policy. After some analysis and hypothesis on the role of the newspaper, the writer concludes that it was one of the catalysts and sources of Malay intellectualism. This paper discusses the challenge in finding information which is scattered, of varying authority and degrees of accessibility. It examines systematically the issues and difficulties existing in the various types of literary resources on the subject, such as scholarly art publications, art books, museum catalogs, thematic books, biographies, biographical dictionaries, art journals and newspapers, as well as web resources. On the topic of scholarly art publishing, it analyses the challenges and limitations in the production of such works, citing costs, limited market and readership. As for art books, the paper raises the problems of investment returns, quality, scarcity of niche publishers, as well as the shortcomings of museum publications and publicity catalogs. It also examines the challenges of dealing with informational resources such as art journals and newspapers. Firstly, a competent reading knowledge of languages other than English is a prerequisite. Secondly, there is the problem of brevity and cursory treatment of the topic in this type of resources. Significantly, there are difficulties in finding a suitable voice and stable readership for such reports. The paper also discusses the drawbacks of web resources, pointing to the lack of guarantee on accuracy and orderliness. Nevertheless, the Internet remains the best tool for locating information on Southeast Asian contemporary artists. The paper concludes with a discussion on the future of Southeast Asian art writing and publishing and a proposal on how these activities could be sustained. The recounting of the history of women's and men's magazines in Singapore begins with a brief history of Malay print in Singapore. During 1876-1941, there were three different phases of Malay journalism : Non-Malays such as Straits-born\r\nMuslims (Jawi Peranakans) and Straits-born Chinese (Baba\r\nPeranakans) dominated the first phase (1875-1905).
