This dataset provides State Courts' annual caseload data by case types, from 2011 to 2024.
Notes: (1) Data is accurate as at 31 December 2024. (2) Family and Juvenile cases are excluded from the State Courts caseload figures with effect from 2014. (3) [Case type: Family and Juvenile, Category: Juvenile Court] - Beyond Parental Control and Child Protection Orders refers to the number of juveniles. (4) Probate cases are excluded from the State Courts caseload figures with effect from 2015. (5) [Case type: Criminal, Category: Criminal and Departmental/Statutory Board] - Criminal charges include District Arrest Case (DAC), Magistrate’s Arrest Case (MAC) and other types of charges. (6) Applications for Protection Order / Non-Publication Order under the Protection from Harassment Act commenced on 15 November 2014. Applications for False Statement Orders came into effect on 1 April 2020, and the Non-Publication Order (NPO) provisions were repealed. The subcategory description of these cases was revised from 'Originating Summons - Application for Protection Order/False Statement Order' to 'Protection from Harassment Court Case' with the operationalisation of the Protection from Harassment Court on 1 June 2021. The Protection from Harassment Court hears matters related to harassment, stalking, cyberbullying and other acts causing alarm or distress under the Protection from Harassment Act. (7) Community Disputes Resolution Tribunals Claims commenced filing on 1 October 2015. (8) Employment Claims Tribunals Claims commenced filing on 1 April 2017. (9) Small Claims Tribunals Claims are categorised as Community Courts and Tribunals cases from 2015 onwards. The claims were categorised as Civil cases before 2015. (10) All Magistrate's Complaints were categorised as Criminal cases from 2011 to 2017. With effect from 2 January 2018, only Magistrate's Complaints that are non-relational (e.g. copyright matters) are categorised as Criminal cases, while all other Magistrate's Complaints are categorised as Community Courts and Tribunals cases. (11) Writ of Summons is called Originating Claim under the Rules of Court 2021, with effect from 1 April 2022. Writ of Summons filed under Rules of Court 2014 will continue to be applicable after 1 April 2022 in specific circumstances. (12) Originating Summons is called Originating Application under the Rules of Court 2021, with effect from 1 April 2022. Originating Summons filed under Rules of Court 2014 will continue to be applicable after 1 April 2022 in specific circumstances. (13) [Case type: Civil, Category: Interlocutory Application] - There are no further breakdowns of the interlocutory applications with effect from 2023. (14) Due to structural changes in case categorisation over the years, caution should be exercised when conducting time-series analysis across the years.
