They are travelling across the world in pursuit of the main antagonist Sephiroth, who seeks to take over the planet. The game is rated Advisory 16 (Suitable for 16 & Above). The player will control the protagonists to explore various locations, interact with non-player characters, undertake quests, and participate in various side activities. Completing missions award experience points, items and cash, which can be used to upgrade skills and gear or make purchases at vendors. Cinematic scenes intersperse the action to progress the storyline. The protagonists fight human, robotic and fantastical creature enemies with combo attacks comprising punches, kicks, weapon strikes, gunfire, as well as with magical abilities such as elemental spells. The party can also summon powerful entities and creatures to aid in battle. Battles feature mild violence that are typically highlighted by sparks and bright flashes with sound effects. Bloodstained surfaces, corpses and bones can be seen at certain locations. Stronger depictions are seen during some story scenes, which show human characters being impaled, slashed or shot in the head, with accompanying blood spurts and bloodstains on characters’ faces. The Advisory 16 Classification Guidelines allow “realistic but not excessively graphic violence with depiction of blood”. There are scenes that depict sexual references and suggestive images. Dialogue between characters may contain sexual innuendos. In one scene, female characters are seen in swimwear, with the camera focusing on their cleavage and buttocks. In another, male characters are seen adopting suggestive postures, such as gyrating their groin during a dance sequence. Under the ADV16 rating, depictions of “still or moving images which may be mildly suggestive” are permitted. The dialogue contains crude language such as “asshole”, “bastard”, “bitch” and “dick”. At one location, several characters are seen smoking unknown substances from hookahs, with the dialogue implying that the substance is affecting their sensory capacities.

The game is rated M18 for violence and gore. Played from a top-down perspective, the player will choose a hero from five character-classes to explore indoor and outdoor environments, such as dungeons, towns, steppes, and swamplands. Depending on the character class chosen, the player can use a variety of weapons and powers, such as swords, arrows, explosives and magical spells against humanoid and creature enemies. Quests can be undertaken while interacting with other characters to progress through the game. Defeating enemies rewards experience points and gold, which can be used to upgrade weapons and armour. Bloodstains and corpses can be encountered during exploration, along with some depictions of graphic violence. Typical combat results in blood spurts, and some enemies explode in a large blood splatter upon being killed. The stronger depictions include a pack of wolves eating a man with his torn flesh visible, characters having their throats slit or being beheaded, and a man being repeatedly bashed, kicked and stabbed by a crazed mob with copious blood splashing onto surfaces. Such portrayals are appropriate at a M18 rating, where the Classification Guidelines allow “depictions of realistic violence, such as killing, maiming or causing other serious injury to humanoid characters.” There are also drug references in some scenes, such as a character who experiences a vision due to the effects of hallucinogenic substances and a character who is knocked out after consuming a spiked drink. Mild coarse language such as “damn”, “bastard” and “shit” are uttered by characters and seen in the English subtitles.
